Learning from Home

It is important that we work together and support each other during this challenging time. We will be in touch with staff and parents and carers shortly with further details of what remote and flexible learning will look like at our school.

We know that we will absolutely survive this challenge of remote learning!  We are from Kilsyth PS!  We are Resilient!  We can meet any challenge!

Parents will receive an email each afternoon outlining the learning activities assigned to their child/ren for the next day.

Positive Behaviour Support

As our students are learning from home, we are still working to promote and acknowledge our school values as a part of our SWPBS approach

  • Excellence – doing our best learning at all times & being a 5 Star Learner at home.
  • Resilience – sticking with tasks and giving things ago even though they are different to normal.
  • Respect – keeping our learning space tidy and speaking to each other in ways which show we think they are important.

We have included a variety of SWPBS resources to families so parents can acknowledge their children showing these values at home – feathers, wings and behaviour matrix charts.

Learning Tools

We are using three key learning tools to supplement our normal learning and teaching resources.

  • SeeSaw – used to set and submit tasks and provide students with feedback
  • Google Classroom – used to work collaboratively and engage in online discussions
  • Zoom – Video conferencing for a range of activities

 These tools are being used in conjunction with online resources we regularly use at school such as Reading Eggs, My Numeracy and Essential Assessments.  We have also provided extensive home learning packs with books and pencils, mini whiteboards and other learning resources for students to use at home.

Learning Environments

Setting yourself up for success involves setting up a great learning environment, including

  • somewhere to sit at a table
  • resources close to hand
  • having comfortable chairs
  • your computer screen at a comfortable height
  • your daily routine somewhere you can see it
  • a nice light space

Make sure you stick the times suggested by your teachers for each activity and take plenty of breaks.

The first and most important message here remains – if your child can learn from home they MUST learn from home. This is a vitally important message from the Premier, Minister and Chief Health Officer.

It is expected that parents and carers will explore all possible options to provide supervision of their children at home before requesting that their child attend onsite learning at school. The government have confirmed that friends and family are allowed to ‘babysit’ children of parents who must attend work outside of the home. Parents are strongly encouraged to make whatever arrangements they can to allow their child to learn remotely.

If there is no possible way for this to happen, please contact the school via email. A form will be provided that must be completed and returned via the school email (kilsyth.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au) as soon as possible. When this form has been completed, parents will be contacted to their child’s eligibility and make appropriate arrangements. It is expected that these forms will be completed on a weekly basis to ensure we have up to date information about your family’s situation.

Students who do attend onsite will be supervised. They will not be involved in ‘normal’ classes. The teacher in the room will be supervising them as they undertake the same remote learning activities as students working from home. There will not be the capacity to allow students to play outside on the playground, nor will they be able to play social games such as basketball. They will be required to maintain 1.5m social distancing at all times. As stated above, remote learning activities will take a total of 3-4 hours. Beyond these learning activities students will be supervised in playing individual games and other basic activities.
